⏵ character information
name: Shelley Lang
canon: Original Character
age: 45
canon point: trapped in a cabin with the girls that he's responsible for protecting and the man he now knows to be the perpetrator-- an old friend, who stabbed him for figuring out this secret.
history: Link here.
abilities: He has the same abilities as an ordinary man with a basic military and criminal investigation background- along with a hobby of hiking and bush crafting. On top of an ability to see spirits which was unlocked after a recent Near Death Experience. He's always had an odd connection to spirit that he didn't recognize-- it just seemed like a series of strange occurrences and coincidences happening around him that he didn't pay much mind to.
personality: Analytical, disillusioned, and a loner at heart, Shelley is nonetheless an optimist at heart. He traveled around a lot in his youth due to his parents and their various careers, which took him up and down the East Coast of the US at various points in time. This showed him various parts of people and society as a while, both the good and the bad, but his ever changing location made it hard for him to ultimately make connection with others. The only consistent friends in his life were the ones he met during his brief stay in the mountains of Pennsylvania-- the siblings John and Gordon, and a girl from the neighborhood named Percy. They would explore the abandoned buildings and caves in the wilderness together-- and Shelley, with his knowledge of the wilderness from hiking with his great uncle, would often serve as a guide for their ragtag little group.
Ultimately, although he would spend summers with his friends before they graduated high school, it was the wilderness where he found his comfort-- and, after the trauma of deployment, the wilderness was where he felt like he was allowed to be himself in a world that he was no longer prepared for. Depression and a certain degree of well founded paranoia were his new friends, and he tried to channel them into focusing on the paranormal and the cryptids that lurked in the wilds. It was his knowledge of finding people in the mountains that ultimately let him survive on the meagre pay of a private investigator. However, it was his loyalty to his family that brought him back to Pennsylvania, where his parents had settled in their retirement.
Unfortunately, his relative isolation and his complex trauma from being deployed in the middle east left him with a tendency towards depression and a poor ability to stay in contact with the people that mattered to him outside of his family. Returning after John's death of illness hadn't felt in right-- but he figured that returning late was better than not returning at all. He did his best to stay in contact with Percy and Gordon, and it tore at his heart to see his childhood friends fractured as they were.
It gave him the opportunity to get to know Junco and Phoebe-- but by that time he had the chance he was already ragged and exhausted from holding himself together for so long.
Enter: a little bird. Shelley had no idea what to make of Lola when she fished him out of the icy spring that frigid autumn morning, but her smile was a warmth in a world that was growing socially colder every year. He didn't know what she wanted or how she planned to help-- but, her kind smile helped him find hope once again.
He didn't know what life was going to offer to him, but after Junco approached him with all of the cash she had on hand to pay for his services as a private investigator to help solve the mystery of her mother's death, he found a renewed will to at least try.
Life doesn't give second chances, but now he had one given to him at high cost. He wasn't going to squander it.
